Therapy is a collaborative and confidential process that provides a supportive space to explore your thoughts, emotions, experiences, relationships, and concerns. Therapy can help you better understand yourself, develop healthier coping strategies, work through difficult experiences, strengthen relationships, and create meaningful changes in your life. At Harness of Joy, therapy is not about telling you what to do. We work alongside you, respecting your experiences, strengths, values, and goals while helping you move toward greater emotional well-being.
Therapy can support people from many different backgrounds and life circumstances. You do not have to be in crisis to seek support. People may come to therapy for help with: Anxiety or persistent worry Depression or low mood Trauma and difficult life experiences Grief and loss Relationship difficulties Stress and burnout Life transitions Self-esteem and confidence Emotional regulation Workplace stress Family concerns Substance-use concerns Personal growth and self-understanding Feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or disconnected from themselves Sometimes people also come to therapy simply because they want a safe space to talk, reflect, and better understand what they are experiencing.
Your first session is an opportunity for us to begin getting to know you and understanding what has brought you to therapy. We may talk about your current concerns, relevant history, strengths, supports, goals, and what you hope will be different as a result of therapy. You are not expected to share everything in your first appointment. There is no pressure to tell your entire story before you feel ready. Therapy moves at a pace that respects your comfort, needs, and readiness. Together, we can begin developing a plan for how therapy may best support you.
Confidentiality is an important part of the therapeutic relationship. Information shared during therapy is generally kept private and confidential and will not be disclosed without your consent. However, there are certain circumstances where a therapist may be legally or professionally required to disclose information. These may include situations involving serious and immediate safety concerns, suspected abuse or neglect where reporting is legally required, or where records are required by law or court order. Your therapist will discuss confidentiality and its limits with you at the beginning of your therapeutic relationship, and you are always welcome to ask questions about privacy and confidentiality.
A standard individual therapy session is approximately 50 minutes. Session lengths may vary depending on the service being provided, such as EMDR therapy, consultation, clinical supervision, assessments, or specialized services. The length of your appointment will be confirmed when your session is booked.
There is no single number of sessions that is right for everyone. The length of therapy depends on many factors, including your concerns, goals, history, circumstances, preferred therapeutic approach, and how you respond to treatment. Some people may benefit from short-term, focused therapy, while others may choose longer-term support. Your progress and goals can be reviewed throughout therapy so that decisions about continuing treatment are made collaboratively.
Psychotherapy focuses on emotional, psychological, behavioural, and relational concerns through therapeutic conversation, evidence-informed interventions, and the development of coping and emotional regulation skills. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in mental health. Psychiatrists can assess and diagnose mental health conditions and may prescribe and manage medications. Psychotherapy and psychiatry can sometimes work together as part of a person's overall mental health care. If additional medical or psychiatric support appears appropriate, your therapist can discuss this with you and encourage you to connect with an appropriate healthcare professional.

Beginning therapy is a personal decision, and it is okay to have questions before taking that step.
You do not need to have everything figured out before reaching out.

“Could therapy help me?”
We would be happy to help you explore that question.
Every gentle step brings you closer to the life you are rebuilding.
